Northeast India emerging as growth engine under Modi: Scindia at Tripura conclave
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Thursday, 9 July 2026 declared that the Northeast region is rapidly emerging as India's new engine of growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and is poised to play a defining role in the country's march toward Viksit Bharat. Scindia made the remarks while addressing the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026 in Agartala, joining virtually from New Delhi.
Tripura as a Gateway to Southeast Asia
The DoNER Minister described Tripura as standing at the intersection of connectivity, commerce, and opportunity — a state he called one of the Northeast's most promising investment destinations. He said PM Modi's Act East Policy has repositioned the region from India's frontier to its gateway to Southeast Asia, unlocking trade and investment opportunities with the ASEAN bloc, which is home to over 670 million people and ranks among the world's largest economic groupings.
Scindia also highlighted Tripura's transformation from a landlocked state into a gateway to the Bay of Bengal, calling it emblematic of the broader Northeast transformation under the current government.
Key Infrastructure Initiatives Highlighted
The Minister pointed to several flagship connectivity projects underpinning the region's rise, including the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway, the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, the Special Economic Zone at Sabroom in southern Tripura, the 'Maitri Setu' bridge linking Tripura and Bangladesh, and the Integrated Check Post. Together, he argued, these initiatives are positioning Tripura as a springboard for exports to Southeast Asia.
He also noted Tripura's status as the host of India's third International Internet Gateway, adding a digital dimension to its strategic infrastructure profile.
Tripura's Natural Resource Advantage
Scindia underscored Tripura's resource strengths — including reserves of natural gas, bamboo, agarwood, rubber, tea, spices, and horticultural produce — as a foundation for manufacturing, food processing, value addition, logistics, and technology-led industries. He noted that Tripura is now India's largest bamboo-producing state and the country's second-largest producer of natural rubber, describing these distinctions as offering immense export and processing opportunities.
Emphasising that 'investment follows confidence, confidence follows infrastructure, and infrastructure follows vision', Scindia urged industry leaders to partner with Tripura in its growth story.
Other Leaders at the Conclave
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Tripura Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma also addressed the inaugural session of the business conclave. Scindia reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to the region, stating that the Ashtalakshmi States are poised to lead India's next chapter of economic growth.
The conclave signals a concerted push by both the Centre and Tripura's state government to attract long-term private investment into a region that has historically lagged in industrial development but is now drawing renewed policy attention.
