New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated on Friday that the northeast region is on the verge of becoming the “economic powerhouse” of the nation, as it is not only embracing new digital technologies but also taking a leading role in the country’s economic growth.
“The northeast region has experienced significant developmental initiatives under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the enhancement of air, road, rail, and waterway connectivity. Currently, the region boasts 17 airports and is also well-connected digitally,” noted Scindia, who serves as the Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER).
During his address at the annual session of the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), the minister remarked, “Each of the eight northeastern states possesses unique strengths, resources, and opportunities, rendering this region an indispensable component of India’s growth narrative.
“Most villages are already connected, but by August-September this year, all villages will achieve digital connectivity with 4G and 5G through the BharatNet programme,” he informed the audience.
He further elaborated that the government is investing approximately $16 billion in establishing a broadband digital highway, which includes the installation of 27,000 cell towers, of which 15,000 have already been set up.
“This initiative is anticipated to be completed by August-September this year, connecting every inch of the country with broadband and ensuring that every village in the northeast has 4G and 5G connectivity,” the minister highlighted.
Women in the northeast region have swiftly adopted digital connectivity to enhance their businesses.
“They are utilizing the North East Region Agri Commodity E-Connect (NERACE), launched by the government to integrate farmers and sellers, thereby improving agricultural connectivity in the region. They are successfully marketing kiwis and other agricultural products globally through this app,” the minister explained.
On this occasion, FLO president Joyshree Das Verma stated, “The economic empowerment of women drives growth, and the most effective method for empowering women is through a women-led development approach. The progress of our nation is inherently linked to the empowerment of its women.”
