Sikkim Issues Health Advisory in Response to HMPV

Gangtok, Jan 9 (NationPress) In response to the recent surge in severe acute respiratory illness cases in China, attributable to Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), officials from the Sikkim government have issued a health advisory to keep a vigilant eye on the situation. Sikkim shares a border of approximately 200 km with China, bordered to the north and northeast by the Tibet Autonomous Region.

A senior official revealed that the Chief Secretary convened a meeting with the Health and Family Welfare Department to evaluate the current threat level and examine the state’s preparedness.

The discussions during the meeting focused on various aspects of the virus, including its transmission methods and symptoms experienced by those affected.

According to the official, the Health and Family Welfare Department is actively monitoring the situation, with robust surveillance systems established. They emphasized that there is no reason for alarm, as current data indicates that the virus is not causing any unusual patterns or severe outbreaks in India. The public is encouraged to follow preventive measures and consult healthcare professionals if symptoms arise.

Identified for the first time in 2001 in the Netherlands, HMPV has since been reported across almost every region globally. While the virus typically leads to mild respiratory illnesses, severe cases may occur in vulnerable populations, such as those with compromised immune systems.

HMPV is transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, via coughing, sneezing, handshakes, or contact with contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat, and shortness of breath.

The official stated that the government would implement awareness campaigns to promote preventive measures, such as frequent hand washing with soap and water, and practicing proper cough and sneeze etiquette using tissues or elbows. Additionally, regular cleaning of contaminated surfaces and avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting respiratory illness symptoms are strongly advised.
