Vadodara, Feb 27 (NationPress) As the Class 10 and 12 board examinations begin across Gujarat on Thursday, one notable examination center at Vadodara's Central Jail featured a unique scenario with just one candidate.

Although the facility initially planned for five inmates to participate in the board exams, only Sanjay Parmar showed up for his Class 10 examination, resulting in a rare situation where a whole examination center was utilized for a single student.

The jail administration had prepared for multiple participants; however, it was reported that four inmates, who were scheduled to take the exams, did not attend.

This led to Parmar completing his test in the presence of three staff members designated to oversee the examination.

The Vadodara Central Jail has been conducting board exams for inmates to assist in their reintegration into society post-sentence. Nonetheless, the low turnout this year raises questions regarding the effectiveness of educational initiatives within the prison system.

In Gujarat, the incorporation of educational programs within the correctional system has shown promising results, highlighted by the recent achievements of inmates in state board examinations.

In May 2024, nine inmates serving life sentences at Surat's Lajpore Central Jail successfully passed the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) Class 12 examinations, attaining a perfect 100 percent pass rate.

In 2016, around 134 inmates participated in Class 10 and Class 12 board exams statewide. This figure rose to 155 in 2017 and further climbed to 183 in 2018, with 155 inmates sitting for the Class 10 exam and 28 for the Class 12 exam.

Despite these progressions, challenges remain. Nationally, as of 2019, less than 22 percent of inmates had access to educational programs, and under 12 percent received vocational training. These statistics underscore the necessity for expanded educational opportunities to promote effective rehabilitation and decrease recidivism.
