What Led to the Collapse of Unity Talks Between SNDP Yogam and NSS?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 28 (NationPress) The intended unity initiative between the SNDP Yogam and the Nair Service Society (NSS) has officially fallen apart, as both groups present differing justifications amid a growing public clash between their leaders, Vellappally Natesan and Sukumaran Nair.
On Wednesday, SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan characterized NSS General Secretary Sukumaran Nair as an "innocent, dignified and selfless" leader, asserting there was no animosity or objection regarding the NSS's choice to withdraw from the unity efforts.
He stressed that the Nair community is a "brotherly community" and called for refraining from any criticism of either the Nair community or the NSS.
In contrast, Nair, countering Vellappally’s remarks, firmly rejected claims of external influence on the NSS's decision.
He asserted that the withdrawal was solely based on internal evaluations and concerns connected to the unity proposal.
"No external pressures were involved in the NSS's decision to step away from the unity discussions," Nair stated.
Explaining the timeline, Nair mentioned that Natesan's son, Tushar Vellappally, had reached out to him, indicating he would meet him in three days.
"But did it need three days?" he questioned, noting that he had already informed that Vellappally need not visit, given his role as the convener of the BJP-led NDA in Kerala.
"Tushar's position raised doubts about any political implications tied to the unity discussions," he remarked.
Nair underscored that the NSS has consistently maintained a neutral stance towards political parties and that any effort perceived to undermine this position would be unacceptable.
"It was not Tushar who was anticipated to come. Due to his political involvement, uncertainties arose regarding the intentions behind the unity effort," he asserted, signaling that the doors to unity discussions are now firmly "closed for good".
Vellappally reaffirmed that his opposition was directed solely at the Muslim League and not against the Muslim community, claiming attempts were underway to depict him as anti-Muslim.
He further stated that media outlets were selectively emphasizing statements for sensational purposes and insisted that his comments were being misrepresented.
This incident has effectively brought the proposed SNDP–NSS unity effort to a sudden conclusion, highlighting a growing mistrust related to political implications and the challenges of community-based unity in Kerala’s tense political climate.
