Srinagar Sees Record Low Max Temperature This Season, Minimum Plummets to -6.6°C

Srinagar, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Kashmir Valley experienced a deep freeze on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature dropping to -6.6°C. The maximum temperature recorded just a day before was 2.8°C, marking it as the lowest maximum temperature of the season so far.

According to officials from the Meteorological (MeT) department, the 2.8°C maximum temperature noted on Monday is the lowest documented this season.

The reduced difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures is a key factor contributing to the extreme cold spell that the Valley has been enduring for the past four days.

The 40-day phase of severe winter, known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan’, commenced on December 21. This period is considered the harshest segment of winter in Kashmir.

Boatmen have been struggling through the Dal Lake, breaking through sheets of ice to navigate the water body.

Many areas witnessed water taps frozen solid, with long icicles hanging from them on Tuesday morning.

Locals, bundled in layers of woolen attire beneath their traditional loose tweed garment, the Pheran, faced the frigid morning cold to light fires around the water taps to melt the ice.

Both the traffic and health departments have issued warnings advising residents against venturing onto slippery roads without caution. Elderly individuals and children are particularly cautioned to avoid going out, especially during the early mornings and late evenings.

The Chillai Kalan will conclude on January 30, after which a gradual improvement in weather is anticipated.

Another significant concern for residents has been the lack of substantial snowfall thus far. The heavy winter snow is essential for replenishing the perennial water reservoirs in the mountains, which sustain rivers, lakes, streams, springs, and wells throughout the summer months.

A winter devoid of snow could lead to dire consequences for the summer supply for the people of Kashmir. Residents are hopeful for ample snowfall this winter.

The recorded minimum temperature was -6.6°C in Srinagar, -7.4°C in Gulmarg, and -7.8°C in Pahalgam.

In Jammu city, the minimum temperature was 7.6°C, 6.4°C in Katra town, 1.1°C in Batote, -2°C in Banihal, and -0.9°C in Bhaderwah.
