Chennai, July 17 (NationPress) In an effort to ease the rising tensions between the DMK and Congress stemming from controversial statements made by DMK MP Tiruchi Siva regarding the esteemed Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj, Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin on Thursday called for unity and restraint among political allies.
Stalin's remarks came amidst an intensifying exchange of words on social media between supporters of both parties, following Siva's comments that many interpreted as an affront to Kamaraj's legacy.
The DMK MP had suggested that Kamaraj would not sleep without air conditioning and claimed he had held DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi's hands during his final moments, urging him to safeguard democracy.
This sparked strong reactions from Congress leaders, including MPs S. Jothimani and Manickam Tagore, resulting in vigorous rebuttals that strained the relationship between the two allies and raised concerns among the opposition regarding the solidarity of the INDIA Bloc.
In a post on his official 'X' handle, Stalin urged all to refrain from divisive commentary and to honor Kamaraj's memory with respect.
“Let us not provide an opportunity for ill-intentioned individuals who aim to incite division for their gain,” he expressed.
“It is inappropriate to engage in controversial public discussions regarding such a monumental Tamil leader. Any opinion should be communicated in a way that upholds the dignity of esteemed leaders.”
Emphasizing Kamaraj's ideals, Stalin remarked, “Let us come together and strive to realize the aspirations of Kamaraj, who dedicated his life to fostering social justice and secular harmony. We should avoid futile debates.”
Stalin also underscored the profound respect that Dravidian leaders held for Kamaraj.
He recalled that social reformer Periyar had referred to Kamaraj as the “True Tamilian,” while DMK's founder C.N. Annadurai had chosen not to field a candidate against him in the Gudiyatham by-election.
Stalin further noted that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had personally conducted Kamaraj's last rites, built his memorial, and declared his birth anniversary as the Day of Educational Development.
On a personal note, Stalin shared that it was one of the greatest honors of his life that Kamaraj, despite his declining health, attended his wedding.
While some Congress leaders continue to voice dissatisfaction over the remarks, senior party figures are proceeding cautiously, aware of the broader political implications for the alliance.
Stalin’s carefully crafted statement is perceived as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and maintain the integrity of the DMK-Congress alliance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
