New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) Activists from Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), alongside students from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL), staged a protest on Tuesday against the university authorities for compelling SOL students to take their exams in a hazardous basement parking area, thus jeopardizing their lives.
Criticizing the university’s negligence, the demonstrators called for a respectful academic environment and claimed that SOL students are facing “educational apartheid”, as even the most basic exam necessities are being withheld from them.
Bhim Kumar, a member of the Delhi State Committee of KYS, stated, “We demand that an FIR be lodged against the DU and SOL officials who are endangering the lives of SOL students.”
“This is blatant discrimination and educational apartheid at its peak, as DU ensures that students in regular colleges have access to proper classrooms for their exams. It is evident that the futures and even lives of SOL students are considered expendable by the DU and SOL administrations,” he added.
Kumar also shared videos showcasing the exam center in the basement parking, revealing students sitting behind green shades while construction activities were ongoing. Piles of construction debris, including hazardous materials like metal pipes, toxic paint, stone slabs, and construction ladders, were visible scattered throughout the basement.
The KYS leader pressed for an immediate resolution to all matters concerning internal assessments and results.
“KYS warns of a significant movement if these issues are not addressed promptly. We will escalate our efforts against the educational apartheid and the criminal neglect of SOL students’ safety,” stated Bhim Kumar.
He accused the SOL and DU administration of routinely denying essential facilities to SOL students.
Every public-funded educational institution is obligated to offer its students dignified settings for exams, he emphasized.
Previously, in 2024, students of the SOL B. Com 1st semester were compelled to take their exams in makeshift tents during the bitter winter at Motilal Nehru College and Aurobindo College, he mentioned.
