Mumbai, Nov 18 (NationPress) The Shiv Sena (UBT) remarked on Tuesday that the Congress party's declaration to contest the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections independently would be ‘suicidal. They emphasized that opposition unity is crucial to counter the BJP's influence.
The Thackeray faction, in its publication 'Saamana', claimed that solidarity is imperative to thwart the BJP's strategy to "overrun the electoral process with hooliganism, mob rule, extensive financial power, and police intervention to detach Mumbai from Maharashtra". They asserted that Maharashtra will not pardon those who defy the sentiments of the Marathi populace.
“Bihar has once again highlighted the extent to which the BJP and its 'backbenchers' engage in electoral manipulations. Now is the time to unite and resist without delving into the debate of differing ideologies. We can address our cultural and ideological differences later. Rahul Gandhi has previously indicated the need to hold the current Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, accountable. This can only be achieved if the opposition stands united,” the editorial cautioned.
The article warned of a potential vote split if Congress opts for an independent campaign in the BMC elections, expressing concern that North Indian and Muslim voters might withdraw their support. However, it argued that “Congress should not be anxious about Muslim and North Indian voters in Mumbai. As Marathi speakers, they will steadfastly support us. We merely need to instill confidence in them. These individuals are suffering under the BJP's mob rule. Among those being displaced in various parts of Mumbai are Hindi-speaking and Muslim communities. Will they endorse the BJP? Absolutely not,” it stated.
The Thackeray faction reminded Congress that the Muslim demographic supported the Maha Vikas Aghadi during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. “The assistance provided by Uddhav Thackeray during the pandemic, irrespective of caste or religion, garnered Muslim votes for Shiv Sena. Regardless of Congress's apprehensions, we are confident that Maha Vikas Aghadi, alongside Shiv Sena, will regain those Muslim votes,” it asserted.
The editorial advised Congress that it would be unrealistic to expect North Indians, Hindi-speaking voters, and Muslims to fully support them following their decision for an independent campaign. “So, you will contest alone in Mumbai. What about the other 27 municipal corporations? Will you adopt the 'Ekla Chalo Re' (going solo) approach there as well? It doesn’t seem likely. The prudent move is for all Marathi people, representing Maharashtra's ethos, to unite and voice their opposition against the BJP. That is in the interest of Maharashtra,” it articulated.
According to the editorial, Congress must avoid indecision, reminiscent of the Samyukt Maharashtra Movement (which sought to establish a separate 'Marathi-speaking' state with Mumbai as its capital). “Set aside the national party's broader agenda for now and focus on how the Marathi community can elevate the saffron flag atop the BMC,” it added.
The Thackeray faction concluded, "While it is indeed true that each political entity presents its own perspective, unity is essential for the Maha Vikas Aghadi. This unity was evident during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections; therefore, Congress should exercise patience. Pursuing the fugitive serves no purpose. Ultimately, if Congress chooses to go solo, it will be their decision," the editorial noted.
