Sukhbir Badal's Resignation from Akali Dal Accepted; Successor Election Scheduled for March 1

Chandigarh, Jan 10 (NationPress) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Working Committee convened on Friday to officially accept Sukhbir Singh Badal's resignation from the presidency of the party. The election to select his successor is set to take place on March 1.

Badal, who had first submitted his resignation in November of last year, was present at the meeting. He emphasized the importance of the committee's acceptance of his resignation and expressed his deep appreciation for the unwavering support he received during his time as party president.

In a statement to the press, Badal extended his gratitude to the party workers for their steadfast backing in his endeavors for the welfare of Punjab and its people. “I am profoundly moved by the affection and confidence they have shown in me,” he remarked.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the party and the state of Punjab as a dedicated member with renewed energy and determination.

During the meeting, senior leader Daljit Singh Cheema shared that the Working Committee also resolved to initiate a membership drive aimed at restructuring the party's organizational framework, starting on January 20. This drive will last for one month, culminating in the presidential election on March 1. Senior leader Gulzar Singh Ranike will oversee the electoral process as the chief election officer.

Cheema indicated that various leaders have been assigned responsibilities in different regions, including Harjinder Singh Dhami for Jammu and Kashmir and Hoshiarpur, and others for regions such as Malwa, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi.

Additionally, Cheema urged all leaders currently outside the SAD due to disciplinary actions to reach out to the disciplinary committee to discuss their reinstatement.

The Working Committee also addressed the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing, expressing concerns that it threatens to dismantle Punjab's marketing structure in favor of privatization.

They asserted that this move is an attempt to reintroduce the controversial three agricultural laws and called for a special session of the Vidhan Sabha to reject the agricultural marketing draft framework. They criticized both the Central government and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for neglecting farmers' issues and failing to resolve the hunger strike of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

Moreover, the committee condemned the AAP government for including numerous fraudulent names on the voter list for the SGPC elections, demanding the immediate removal of these fake entries. They also criticized the establishment of the chief secretary position in Chandigarh and other appointments that they believe undermine Punjab’s authority over the union territory.
