Southern Railway Launches Summer Special Nilgiri Mountain Train to Accommodate Tourist Demand
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 8 (NationPress) To accommodate the anticipated influx of tourists during the summer holiday period, the Southern Railway's Salem Division has introduced a summer special service on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), connecting Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district with Udhagamandalam (Ooty) in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.
This initiative aims to cater to the increasing number of visitors flocking to this well-known hill station in the Nilgiris.
As per railway officials, the special mountain train will commence operations from March 27 to July 5, running bi-weekly on Fridays and Sundays from Mettupalayam to Ooty. The train will leave Mettupalayam at 9:10 a.m. and is expected to arrive in Udhagamandalam by 2:25 p.m., providing passengers with a scenic journey through the beautiful Nilgiri hills.
The return trip will operate from March 28 to July 6, on Saturdays and Mondays, departing from Ooty at 11:25 a.m. and reaching Mettupalayam at 4:20 p.m.
Officials stated that the launch of these special services is a direct response to the significant rise in tourist bookings during the summer months, a time when families, students, and travelers migrate to hill stations to escape the sweltering heat of the plains.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, currently operates between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam and is celebrated for its stunning vistas of lush forests, tea estates, tunnels, and steep mountain paths, making it one of the most cherished tourist experiences in South India.
Under its regular schedule, the heritage train departs Mettupalayam at 7:10 a.m. and arrives in Ooty around noon. The route spans approximately 46 kilometers and draws both domestic and international tourists eager to experience this historic steam-powered mountain railway.
However, as school and college exams conclude and summer breaks begin, ticket demand for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway has surged.
Many travelers have found it challenging to secure seats on the regular service due to overwhelming demand. Officials believe that the additional summer special services will alleviate ticket shortages and welcome more adventurers looking to enjoy the cool weather and scenic allure of the Nilgiris.
Passengers are encouraged to book their tickets in advance through authorized booking platforms to avoid last-minute hassles, as the mountain train continues to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu during the summer.
