Surat, March 2 (NationPress) Commuters in Surat, Gujarat, are celebrating a significant improvement in infrastructure with the opening of a ₹ 54-crore, 502-metre long railway underpass bridge that links Limbayat and Dindoli. This underpass, the longest in the state, was constructed in collaboration with the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the Urban Development Department of the Gujarat government. It was inaugurated by C.R. Patil, the BJP State President and Union Jal Shakti Minister, on Sunday.
The modern underpass intends to eradicate persistent traffic congestion and accidents at the railway crossing, ensuring quicker and safer travel for thousands of daily commuters.
Featuring a ₹ 1.5 crore HVAC system, it promotes clean air circulation by filtering out vehicle emissions. The project also incorporates fire safety features, further bolstering the safety of motorists.
Previously, commuters had to navigate a 2-3 km detour to bypass the railway crossing. With seven railway lines traversing the area, this underpass significantly alleviates congestion and improves roadway safety.
During the inauguration, Minister C.R. Patil hailed the project as a transformative addition to Surat's transport framework, expressing gratitude to local officials for their contributions. “This bridge is an essential solution, conserving time and providing a hassle-free journey for the residents of Surat,” he stated.
In a post on his X account, Minister Patil expressed in Gujarati (translated), “Today, I experienced immense joy in inaugurating the underpass linking Limbayat and Dindoli in the Limbayat Assembly. This underpass, the first in the state, is fitted with a complete weatherproof system. Upon its opening, approximately 60,000 motorists will benefit from reduced traffic daily...”
The state boasts a vast road network exceeding 1.68 lakh kilometers, including 49 national highways covering 6,572 km, alongside efficiently maintained state highways that provide seamless connectivity. Additionally, it features a robust railway network of around 5,300 km, facilitating the transport of goods and passengers.
