Chennai, Jan 23 (NationPress) Ramaiah, a significant suspect in the homicide of anti-mining advocate K. Jagbar Ali, has turned himself in at the Namanasamudram police station located in Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu, on Thursday.
This case has garnered considerable attention as it underscores the perilous situations faced by whistleblowers challenging illegal mining activities. Jabbar Ali, who lived in Vengalur within the Thirumayam taluk, was recognized for his vocal opposition to unlawful quarrying practices in the area.
On January 17, Ali was tragically hit by a lorry while riding his motorcycle home after attending prayers at a nearby mosque. Initially thought to be an accident, the incident is now believed to be part of a premeditated plot.
The ongoing investigation, now overseen by the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), has already resulted in the apprehension of four individuals: Rasu, a quarry owner in Thulaiyanur; his son Dinesh; lorry owner Muruganandam; and driver Kasinathan.
Ramaiah, a co-owner of the quarry, had been evading capture since the incident, but his surrender is a crucial advancement in the investigation.
In response to the event, K. Annamalai, the president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, labeled the murder as a stark reminder of the escalating dangers encountered by whistleblowers in the state.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Annamalai urged for a comprehensive investigation into what he termed a “deeply entrenched conspiracy” linked to Ali’s death.
“This incident transcends a mere road accident. It represents a calculated conspiracy aimed at silencing a social activist. The state government must ensure that the true orchestrators are identified and held accountable. Only then will such occurrences cease, and whistleblowers will feel secure in voicing their concerns,” Annamalai stated.
The BJP leader also referenced a similar incident in K. Annamalai, where another whistleblower opposed to illegal mining was reportedly murdered.
Annamalai reiterated that the BJP has played a pivotal role in shining a light on Ali’s case and emphasized the necessity for accountability at every level.
As the CB-CID takes over the investigation, the murder of K. Jagbar Ali continues to ignite outrage and calls for enhanced protection for activists exposing illegal operations.
