New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) Tahir Hussain, a significant figure accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, emerged from Tihar jail on Wednesday morning and initiated his election campaign in the Mustafabad constituency, all under police oversight.
Tahir Hussain, a former Councillor affiliated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is contesting the 2025 Delhi elections on an AIMIM ticket. He was recently granted a six-day custody parole by the Supreme Court to facilitate his campaigning for the Assembly elections.
Upon his release, Hussain arrived at the Mustafabad constituency, where he engaged with his supporters, welcomed local citizens, and encouraged them to back his candidacy. The accused was accompanied by police personnel during this outreach.
The AIMIM candidate has been allowed custody parole by the Supreme Court from January 29 to February 3, enabling him to campaign under police supervision for 12 hours each day, from 6 am to 6 pm.
The imprisoned former AAP leader conveyed his optimism about performing well in the forthcoming elections, despite feeling ‘abandoned’ by his former party.
“Even after spending five years in jail, the people of Mustafabad stand by me. It is their decision that will determine my fate,” he stated.
Hussain remarked, “After five years, this is my chance to step out of jail, and I am filled with happiness. As I left the prison, I felt anxious, but now I am joyful because so many individuals came to see me.”
He emphasized not depending on any political brand, stating that he is relying on the backing of the people.
“The residents of Mustafabad view me as a son, a brother among them. Their overwhelming support brings me immense joy. I have complete faith in them,” Hussain expressed.
Mustafabad constituency in Delhi has a large minority population, and major political parties have nominated predominantly Muslim candidates, hoping to resonate with voter sentiments.
Hussain will face competition from Congress candidate Ali Mehdi, son of former MLA Hasan Mehdi. AAP has put forth Adil Ahmad Khan, a journalist-turned-politician.
The BJP has nominated Mohan Singh Bisht, who is a sitting MLA from the adjacent Karawal Nagar.
