New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) Tahir Hussain, the candidate from AIMIM and a prominent figure linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, has officially commenced his election campaign after being released from jail on custody parole this Wednesday. He asserted that his political ascent is fundamentally supported by the people of Mustafabad rather than any political affiliations.
After spending five years in prison, the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor expressed a mix of relief and happiness upon his release.
“Emerging from jail after five years fills me with joy. Initially, I felt anxious, but the large turnout of supporters to welcome me has brought me immense happiness,” he remarked to the crowd gathered to greet him.
He underlined that this electoral endeavor is not tied to any political entity, highlighting that it does not involve Arvind Kejriwal's AAP or Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP. “This moment is historic as it marks the first time someone from Mustafabad, a son and brother of this area, is poised to become an MLA. Witnessing this today fills me with joy, and I have complete faith in the people of Mustafabad,” Hussain stated.
Reiterating the importance of the community in his political journey, he expressed, “These emotions, these challenges, are significant. For the very first time, the people are advocating for themselves, independent of any political labels such as Kejriwal's or Modi's. It is solely the residents of Mustafabad who are rallying to support my election.”
Hussain's release occurs amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding his role in the 2020 Delhi riots, where he faces severe allegations of inciting violence that resulted in extensive disorder.
The Supreme Court approved his custody parole on Tuesday, enabling him to engage in campaigning for the upcoming Delhi elections. The court has permitted him parole for 12 hours daily, from January 29 to February 3, allowing him to actively partake in the electoral process.
Hussain is running as the AIMIM candidate in the Mustafabad constituency.
He is significantly implicated in the unrest that unfolded in northeast Delhi on February 24, 2020, which resulted in at least 53 fatalities and around 700 injuries.
In December 2024, Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) declared Hussain's candidacy for the Mustafabad constituency in the Delhi Assembly elections.
