Chennai, May 1 (NationPress) In a significant move to support rural laborers, the Union Ministry of Rural Development has allocated Rs 2,999 crore to Tamil Nadu as part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the financial year 2024–25.
This financial distribution resolves months of speculation regarding the delay in funding to the state. Out of the total allocation, Rs 2,851 crore is specifically designated for clearing wage obligations.
As per recent correspondence from Sanjay Kumar, Director (MGNREGS) at the Union Ministry, around Rs 740 crore is set aside for beneficiaries from Scheduled Castes, Rs 43 crore for Scheduled Tribes, and Rs 2,068 crore for other workers.
A copy of this notification has been forwarded to the Tamil Nadu government. To date, the state has already received Rs 1,111 crore from the approved funds, while the pending dues concerning the material component amount to Rs 1,246 crore for 2024–25.
The state government is optimistic that the remaining funds will be disbursed soon. The delay in wage payments has caused considerable hardship for rural workers since November of last year.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has consistently called on the Union government to expedite the release of funds, claiming that the BJP-led Centre is trying to undermine the scheme, which he labels as the "backbone and lifeblood of the rural economy".
The ruling DMK party has also organized statewide protests demanding the release of pending payments, leading to rising frustration in various areas.
In Thirumani village, located in Vellore district, residents recently conducted a road blockade, while workers in Sathyamangalam, Erode district, initiated a strike earlier this month, pledging not to resume work until payment issues are resolved.
Tamil Nadu currently supports around 91 lakh active workers from 76 lakh households enrolled in MGNREGS.
Importantly, 86 percent of the employment opportunities are offered to women, and 29 percent of the workforce belongs to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.
Each year, the initiative also encompasses approximately 1 lakh differently-abled workers. Meanwhile, the office of the State Rural Development Commissioner has circulated an agenda template to all district Collectors for discussions at the Gram Sabha meetings scheduled for May Day.
