Mumbai, Sep 29 (NationPress) The BJP has urged the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena to abandon the annual Dussehra rally scheduled for October 2, given the devastation caused by severe rains and flooding in Marathwada and other regions of Maharashtra.
This demand arises as the Thackeray camp criticizes the MahaYuti government for its handling of the natural disaster and delays in announcing the crop loan waivers promised before last year's state assembly elections.
The BJP has suggested that the funds allocated for the Dussehra event should be redirected to assist farmers affected by the catastrophic weather conditions.
Keshav Upadhye, the state BJP chief spokesperson, stated on X: “The flood situation in Marathwada is dire. Everything has been devastated. Uddhav Thackeray spent three hours visiting five districts and shared his sorrow, pain, and anguish. In light of his displayed feelings, it is time to take action. During your tenure as Chief Minister, you occasionally remained inactive; now is your chance for redemption. The Dussehra event must be canceled, with expenses redirected to flood victims. That would be a genuine expression of empathy for their suffering.”
Upadhye took a jab at Uddhav Thackeray, noting that his father, Balasaheb Thackeray, used to provide meaningful guidance during the Dussehra rally. “Yet Uddhav seems more focused on attacking Eknath Shinde for leaving him. Why spend significant funds on the rally?” he questioned.
The BJP's plea comes as the Thackeray camp prepares for the annual Dussehra rally at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park, Dadar, in north-central Mumbai, intending to rally support for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.
On Saturday, Thackeray insisted that the Maharashtra government should immediately declare a complete farm loan waiver and provide financial aid of Rs 50,000 per hectare to farmers severely impacted by the floods and heavy rains.
“Today, I plead with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on behalf of the farmers: make them debt-free and announce Rs 50,000 per hectare timely. Cease bank notices demanding loan repayments,” he urged at a press conference.
He criticized the state government for its sluggishness in providing assistance to the damaged areas.
Thackeray emphasized that the government's immediate help is crucial to restore farmers, as the relentless rains and floods have caused extensive damage in Marathwada, with further destruction anticipated as rains continue.
“The current aid of Rs 7-8 thousand per hectare is inadequate. Restoring agricultural land will require substantial resources, but how can farmers manage to repay their existing debts? Therefore, a complete loan waiver is essential,” he added.
He condemned the BJP-led MahaYuti government, stating that “Farmers have yet to receive the Rs 14,000 crore assistance promised over the past two to three years. The loan waiver pledged in 2017 has not been executed. The Maharashtra government must now provide Rs 50,000 per hectare, similar to what the Punjab government has done, to support farmers suffering from this natural disaster. This is vital, as farmers' losses will not be recoverable in the next two to three years.”
