Thiruvananthapuram, April 4 (NationPress) Following an incident where his convoy was reportedly obstructed and a member of his security detail was attacked in the Malappuram district of Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reassured that he was unharmed and expressed his appreciation for the support from his followers.

In a post on X, Tharoor remarked, "I am truly grateful for all the messages and calls expressing concern regarding the unfortunate incident last night when my security guard was assaulted. He is in good health, and I emerged unscathed. A heartfelt thank you to all my friends and well-wishers. We persevered yesterday and successfully completed two scheduled events. Our ongoing activities remain uninterrupted."

The police reported that the altercation occurred near the Chellithode bridge at Thiruvali in Wandoor at approximately 7:30 PM. Tharoor was en route to an election campaign event for Congress leader A.P. Anilkumar when his convoy was halted.

Footage from the scene depicted the senior Congress figure seated in the front of his vehicle while a group of individuals surrounded them, some shouting slogans.

The 70-year-old leader acknowledged the occurrence in his Saturday morning post. Following a complaint from his security personnel, the Wandoor police initiated an investigation, apprehended suspects, and confiscated two vehicles associated with the incident.

According to the police, a case was logged at Wandoor Police Station based on the report from Tharoor’s bodyguard, Ratheesh K.P. So far, one individual has been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing.

Kerala is preparing for elections, set to take place in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting for the 140-member Assembly scheduled for May 4. The current Assembly’s tenure will conclude on May 23.

The state boasts around 2.70 crore voters, comprising 1.31 crore male voters, 1.38 crore female voters, and 277 voters from the third gender.

These upcoming elections are deemed vital for the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), as Kerala stands as the sole state in India presently administered by the Left. The state, known for its alternating political dynamics between the LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), is also witnessing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a formidable contender, with its electoral share significantly increasing in recent elections.
