Ahmedabad, April 7 (NationPress) In light of escalating global economic instability and domestic political tensions, the Congress party has gathered in Ahmedabad for its highly awaited two-day National Convention—an event rich in symbolism and strategy.
Prominent Congress figures, such as Shashi Tharoor, K.C. Venugopal, Ashok Gehlot, and Mallikarjun Kharge, have arrived in the city ahead of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting set for April 8.
With over 90 percent of CWC members present and the anticipated arrival of the party’s leadership—Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—on April 8, this convention represents a crucial effort to rejuvenate the party's ideological foundation, political stance, and electoral preparedness.
Speaking with the media in Ahmedabad, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed apprehension regarding the trajectory of the global economy, cautioning that numerous nations seem to be on the brink of recession.
“Our situation was more favorable with a growth rate of 5.4 percent, and while it might decline, we could still avert a recession,” he stated.
Tharoor highlighted the necessity of swiftly establishing fruitful bilateral trade agreements to protect India’s exports and economic interests.
“The outcome of these negotiations is pivotal,” he remarked.
In a pointed commentary on previous economic hurdles, Tharoor referred to the 26 percent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods during the Trump administration, which adversely affected Indo-US trade relations.
“This is indeed a very troubling issue. There were significant expectations that bilateral discussions with the U.S. would provide assurances, but the immediate impact of this tariff increase was detrimental not just for India but also globally,” said the Congress MP.
Reflecting on the historical relevance of Ahmedabad for the Congress, Tharoor remarked that this city was where Mahatma Gandhi first assumed the presidency of the Congress, marking a critical moment in India’s fight for freedom.
“We are mindful of that legacy. It’s also the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, another monumental figure in our history,” he added.
The two-day event is expected to outline a comprehensive strategy for the 2029 general elections, concentrating on fortifying the Congress organization in Gujarat and nationwide.
Discussions will also focus on social justice, economic challenges, and the restoration of constitutional norms.
