Mahalaya is a significant day in the Hindu calendar, marking the conclusion of the Pitru Paksha (a period dedicated to ancestor worship) and the commencement of the Devi Paksha (a sacred fortnight that initiates the Durga Puja festivities), symbolizing the ceremonial arrival of Goddess Durga for the annual festival.
While the official start of Durga Puja is on 'Shasthi' (September 28), the festivities kick off from Mahalaya.
The early morning broadcast of 'Mahishasur Mardini' -- a compilation of hymns and songs dedicated to Goddess Durga -- was transmitted on All India Radio (AIR).
This tradition began in the early 1930s and has since become a cherished ritual of Mahalaya.
On this special occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his wishes to the community, stating, "Wishing you all Shubho Mahalaya! As the sacred days of Durga Puja approach, may our lives be illuminated with purpose. May the divine blessings of Maa Durga bestow upon us strength, joy, and health," he shared on X.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also offered his greetings, saying, "Shubho Mahalaya! On this holy occasion, I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone. May the bountiful love of Maa Durga shower upon us blessings of joy, strength, prosperity, and health in every household," he posted on X.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee shared a Durga Puja song that she penned and composed on her X account.
Wishing the community on Mahalaya, she expressed, "Awake Durga, awake, bearer of ten weapons. On the occasion of Tan, Agomoni, and Abahan, I convey my heartfelt Mahalaya greetings to all. I am sharing a new Puja song that I have written and composed."
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders also performed ‘tarpan’ at the Baghbazar ghat for party workers who lost their lives due to political violence in the state in recent years. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya immersed himself in the Hooghly river and offered prayers along with other party members.
