Bhubaneswar, Sep 14 (NationPress) Three individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the gang-rape of a woman, who had been a Facebook acquaintance of one of them, in Bhubaneswar, according to a police spokesperson on Sunday.
The suspects were identified as Chandan Ku Hati alias Chandu, 25, and Prasanna Ku Acharya, 37, from Chasikhanda village under the jurisdiction of the Biridi police station, along with Rajesh Kumar Das, 32, from the Jagatsinghpur Town police station area in Jagatsinghpur district.
According to police sources, the victim, aged 23, initially connected with the main suspect, Chandan, via the widely-used social media platform Facebook.
Over time, they developed a romantic bond through their communications on Facebook. During these interactions, Chandan allegedly assured the victim that he could assist her in meeting a musician and provide her with an opportunity to pursue a singing career.
In a premeditated scheme, Chandan, in collaboration with the other accused, invited her to a lodge under the guise of a photo shoot.
The victim’s sister reported that trusting her boyfriend's promises, the victim left her home on September 10 to meet the musician. Chandan and Prasanna subsequently took her to a lodge situated in the Chandrasekharpur area of the city, where Chandan’s friend Rajesh worked as a caretaker.
In her complaint, the victim’s sister alleged that the individuals sexually assaulted the woman with the assistance of the caretaker at the lodge.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police launched an investigation by registering a case (147/25) on September 11.
A senior police official stated that during the investigation, evidence surfaced indicating that the accused had deceived the victim under false pretenses of helping her meet a musician. They allegedly made her consume drug-laced food at the lodge and forcibly confined her in a room, where she was sexually assaulted. Rajesh, the lodge’s caretaker, played a crucial role in facilitating this heinous act.
The police reported that after gathering reliable information, all three suspects were apprehended on Saturday and confessed to their crimes during interrogation. They were subsequently presented before the court and placed in judicial custody.
