Raipur/Sukma, Dec 18 (NationPress) Security forces have successfully neutralised three Maoists, including a female member, during an encounter in the hilly forests within the jurisdiction of Golapalli police station in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, on Thursday morning, according to police sources.
The operation, spearheaded by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), commenced following credible intelligence regarding the presence of Maoist insurgents in the region.
Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G. Chavan confirmed that intermittent gunfire ensued when the DRG team surrounded a forested area, resulting in the elimination of the three insurgents. The remains of the deceased fighters, including the woman, were retrieved from the scene, and the search for any further threats or recoveries remains ongoing, the officer noted.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of successful anti-Naxal operations in the state, with a total of 284 Maoists neutralised in encounters across Chhattisgarh in 2025 to date.
The Bastar division, which includes seven districts such as Sukma, is responsible for 255 of these casualties, underscoring the increased intensity of operations in the heart of the insurgency.
Merely a day prior, on December 17, a group of 11 Maoists—including five women, collectively carrying a bounty of Rs 37 lakh—surrendered in the adjacent Narayanpur district, influenced by government initiatives like the “Maad Bachao Abhiyan” (Save Maad Campaign) and “Poona Margem - From Surrender to Rehabilitation”.
Their surrender at the Superintendent of Police’s office indicates a growing disenchantment among lower-tier cadres.
Authorities attribute these trends to persistent pressure from security forces and rehabilitation schemes, leading to a decline in Maoist dominance in the Bastar area.
Each surrendered Maoist received an immediate financial incentive of Rs 50,000 and will benefit from the Chhattisgarh government’s rehabilitation policy. In total, 298 Maoist cadres have surrendered in Narayanpur district alone in 2025, reflecting the diminishing influence of Maoism and an increasing trust in peace and development initiatives.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has established a target of March 2026 to eradicate the Maoist threat from the country.
