Did TMC Issue a Bengali-Only Whip for KMC Budget Session?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 16 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has circulated a whip via WhatsApp on Monday, directing its councillors in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to converse solely in Bengali during the current budget session of the local government.
This initiative by the TMC aims to intensify the party's protest against the purported assault and mistreatment of migrant workers from West Bengal in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, while also appealing to linguistic sentiments ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Bappaditya Dasgupta, the TMC chief whip in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, urged councillors to utilize Bengali in discussions regarding the budget.
“Councillors have been encouraged to participate in the struggle to protect the identity of Bengalis and ensure that all speeches are delivered in Bengali during this budget session,” he stated.
It is noteworthy that some councillors from the ruling party are native speakers of Hindi or Urdu and often communicate in Hindi or English during budget discussions. Following the chief whip’s request, these councillors are now anticipated to present their speeches in Bengali.
The budget for this year will be deliberated in the civic body over the coming days. Analysts observe that while the BJP has been targeting the TMC with accusations of corruption, the ruling party seems to be counterbalancing these claims by emphasizing Bengali linguistic and cultural identity.
“Bengali culture is under attack nationwide. Even scholars from Bengal are not receiving any relief. Bengalis are facing harassment in BJP-ruled regions for expressing themselves in Bengali -- the language in which Rabindranath Tagore penned the national anthem and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed ‘Vande Mataram’,” remarked Dasgupta.
He concluded, “Given the current harassment faced by Bengalis, Bengali has become the language of our protest. I have made this appeal to my party councillors. Everyone witnessed the mayor delivering the budget speech in Bengali last Friday, and it is expected that other councillors will follow suit.”
