Aparupa Poddar gets interim bail after surrendering in Serampore court
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Aparupa Poddar surrendered before the Serampore sub-division court on Saturday, 4 July and was granted interim bail in a case of allegedly obstructing police work. The two-time MP from Arambagh has been directed to appear before the MP-MLA special court at Mayukh Bhavan, Salt Lake, Kolkata, on 30 September.
Background: The Obstruction Case
The Chandannagar Police Commissionerate had registered a suo motu case against Aparupa Poddar on charges of obstructing police duty. The incident occurred when officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested her husband, Shakir Ali — a Trinamool councillor — in connection with a Ram Navami violence case earlier in the week. Aparupa had reportedly intervened during the arrest, prompting the suo motu action.
Non-Bailable Clause and Surrender
According to the police, Aparupa initially failed to appear at the Serampore police station on the designated date. This led authorities to add a non-bailable clause to the case, compelling her to approach the court directly for relief. She appeared in court on Saturday alongside her husband, after which the court granted her interim bail. Aparupa made no public statement following the bail order.
Shakir Ali Also Gets Bail
In a parallel development, the NIA court granted Shakir Ali conditional bail on Friday, a day before his wife's court appearance. Ali had been arrested by NIA officials in the Ram Navami violence case, which has drawn significant political attention given the couple's TMC affiliations.
What the Lawyers and Police Said
Aparupa's lawyer Joydeep Mukherjee confirmed the next court date, saying, 'We will appear in the MP-MLA court at Mayukh Bhavan in Salt Lake in Kolkata on September 30.' On the suo motu police case, he argued, 'The police will do the police's work. We will do our work. The court has accepted our word... Even though there is no incident of attempt to murder as no one was assaulted! The police filed a suo motu case. We will fight it legally.'
Chandannagar Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Yadav said the police may issue a fresh notice to Aparupa. 'We had called her to get information. We may call her again. We have been asked to find out who was there that day. We will call again if necessary. We will send another notice to her,' he said.
What Happens Next
The matter now moves to the MP-MLA special court, which handles cases involving sitting and former legislators. Aparupa's legal team has signalled it will contest the charges, while the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate has kept open the possibility of summoning her again as part of its ongoing inquiry into the obstruction incident. The NIA's Ram Navami violence case against Shakir Ali also continues separately.
