Kolkata, Aug 18 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress heavyweight Anubrata Mondal was granted anticipatory bail today by the Bolpur Sub-divisional Court in West Bengal after he voluntarily surrendered. He faces allegations of verbally assaulting the Inspector-in-charge of Bolpur Police Station in the Birbhum district.
During the court session, Mondal requested anticipatory bail citing health issues and his advanced age. The presiding judge, Banikbrata Dutta, approved his request without imposing any conditions.
His attorney, Nupur Dutta Banerjee, stated: "My client attended the court today and was granted bail. Due to his poor health and age, the court did not set any conditions for his release."
On May 29, Mondal, who serves as the convenor of the Trinamool's Birbhum district committee, was accused of making threatening phone calls to Bolpur Police Station IC Liton Halder. The allegations include abusive language directed at the policeman's wife and mother, with the audio of this conversation later circulating widely on social media.
His behavior has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and sparked internal scrutiny within his own party.
Following the incident, Mondal issued an apology to the party's leadership for his remarks. The police summoned him twice for questioning, but he failed to appear on both occasions, later attending the Bolpur Sub-divisional Police Officer’s office.
Notably, Mondal was previously arrested in August 2022 related to an alleged cattle smuggling case and spent time in Tihar Jail, Delhi. He received bail from the Supreme Court in the CBI case on July 30, 2024.
On September 20, 2024, he was also granted bail in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case, after being incarcerated for over two years, leading to a grand welcome from supporters upon his release on September 23 of the previous year.
