Kolkata, June 6 (NationPress) The National Commission of Women (NCW) has urged the West Bengal Police to take decisive and immediate measures against Anubrata Mondal, the former district president of the Trinamool Congress in Birbhum. This call to action follows a disturbing viral audio recording in which Mondal threatened a police officer with horrific comments regarding the officer's mother and wife.
In addition, the NCW has requested a detailed report from the state Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, within 72 hours of receiving their communication.
The primary concern raised is that, although a case has been filed against Mondal, the local police have only conducted a single questioning session without pursuing any substantial action.
Given the serious nature of the allegations and the victim being a police officer, the NCW has sent a strongly worded missive to DGP Kumar demanding clarity on the situation.
“The National Commission for Women is deeply troubled by the apparent inaction of the state police in this case, especially amid clear public outrage. This lack of action not only emboldens repeat offenders but also severely undermines police morale and public trust in law enforcement’s impartiality and responsiveness. It is well-known that Mr. Mondal has a significant history of intimidation, criminal behavior, and corruption, including previous arrests by the CBI,” the NCW letter stated.
The NCW expressed disbelief that no effective legal action has been taken by the police, despite the overwhelming evidence and Mondal's criminal past.
“If the family of a senior police officer can be subjected to such threats without repercussions, what message does this send to the general public, particularly women?” the NCW letter emphasized.
Mondal was previously arrested in August 2022 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to a large-scale cattle-smuggling case in West Bengal. He was later apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as well. After spending over two years in Tihar Jail in New Delhi, he was recently granted bail and has since returned to his residence in Bolpur, Birbhum.
Following the viral audio's release, the CBI has initiated a new investigation to determine whether any witnesses in the cattle-smuggling case were similarly coerced by Mondal or his associates to alter their testimonies.
