Kolkata, May 30 (NationPress) Anubrata Mondal, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress, has been charged with making threatening remarks toward a police officer, allegedly stating he would sexually assault the officer's mother and wife.
In light of the backlash following the emergence of a viral audio clip featuring these threats, the Trinamool Congress party took swift action, urging Mondal to issue a public apology.
"The party categorically disavows and does not support the statements made by Anubrata Mondal against the police officer. We vehemently condemn his use of offensive and intolerable language. We have instructed him to offer an unconditional apology within the next four hours; otherwise, disciplinary measures will be pursued," the statement read.
Following this, the Birbhum District Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Mondal under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Mondal subsequently issued a letter expressing regret for his conduct, attributing his outburst to ongoing medication and public complaints about the police officer in question.
"I deeply regret my actions. However, I must ask, how did the audio of my conversation with the police officer become public? How did BJP leaders gain access to that recording?" Mondal raised.
Earlier in the day, the BJP's Information Technology cell chief, Amit Malviya, along with the party's state president in West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar, had shared the audio on their X profiles.
Mondal was previously arrested on August 22 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a multi-crore cattle smuggling case in West Bengal. He was later taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and spent over two years in Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
Recently released on bail, Mondal has returned to his residence in Bolpur of Birbhum district.
