Chennai, June 23 (NationPress) After reclaiming the historic 160-acre Madras Race Course campus in Guindy nearly a year ago, the Tamil Nadu government is making significant strides towards transforming a large segment of this site into an urban green haven.

A tender worth Rs 25 crore has been issued to appoint a consultant responsible for crafting a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) for an eco-park that will span 118 acres of the reclaimed land. The appointed consultant is expected to complete the DFR within 10 months, which will encompass detailed landscaping plans, 3D visualizations, and virtual tours of the proposed eco-park.

Following this plan, the horticulture department will oversee the implementation, which includes cost assessments and a phased approach to park development.

According to government sources, the planned eco-park will feature various themed sections, including a forest experience area, a flower tunnel, a bonsai garden, and greenhouses housing exotic plant species. Recreational and aesthetic elements such as gazebos, walking paths, garden lighting, a cafeteria, and a children’s play zone will also be included.

“Our first steps will involve establishing flower beds, followed by creating an irrigation system,” stated Kumaravel Pandiyan, the Director of the Horticulture Department.

“We are also in the process of planting native trees, including neem, pungam, poovarasu, and venmab, across the area to cultivate a natural green canopy,” he added.

This transformation comes after a significant event in September 2024, when the state revenue department took control of the entire 160-acre property, effectively ending the Madras Race Club’s (MRC) 74-year lease.

Out of the total land, 118 acres—valued at approximately Rs 4,800 crore—was allocated to the horticulture department. Nevertheless, the MRC continues to manage entry and operations at the site.

Horticulture officials have clarified that their authority currently extends only to the 118-acre green area, while the remaining land, including existing structures, is still under the jurisdiction of the revenue department.
