Chennai, June 22 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced on Sunday that the state plans to create a cutting-edge 750-bed multispecialty paediatric hospital at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research campus located in Guindy.
This facility will span six acres and will be linked to a postgraduate and super-specialty paediatric institute under the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
Upon completion, it will stand as the third significant healthcare institution on the Guindy campus, joining the Kalaignar Centenary Super-speciality Hospital and the National Institute of Ageing.
The state has earmarked Rs 487.66 crore for this venture, which includes a seven-storey hospital complex covering an area of 3.15 lakh square feet.
Besides the main hospital, the project will also include hostels for doctors, nurses, medical students, and professors, along with state-of-the-art medical equipment and infrastructure.
During his site visit, Minister Subramanian remarked, “This is the highest allocation made for any hospital project in Tamil Nadu till now.” He was accompanied by senior health officials, including Health Secretary P. Senthilkumar.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has approved the initiative, and tenders are expected to be released soon.
Construction is projected to start by September this year.
The hospital will be entirely funded and managed by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
This forthcoming paediatric facility will include 100 ICU beds, pay wards, shared wards, and suite rooms.
According to University Vice-Chancellor K. Narayanasamy, the hospital will host 20 departments, featuring 14 unique specialties.
These specialties will encompass general medicine, critical care, surgery, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, cardiology, urology, hemato-oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and an organ transplant unit.
Narayanasamy added that the institute will provide postgraduate super-specialty courses in paediatrics upon its establishment.
The aim is to serve as a centre of excellence, particularly in addressing rare paediatric diseases, while bridging the gap between academic training and practical healthcare delivery.
This new paediatric institute is anticipated to enhance the university's academic reputation and support its participation in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), thereby elevating Tamil Nadu’s standing in medical education and research.
