Chennai, Oct 16 (NationPress) Members of the AIADMK party made a strong statement on Thursday at the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by donning badges that proclaimed “Save the Kidneys”. This act was a protest against the state government’s purported inaction regarding the kidney trade scandal that has shaken the state.
The protest unfolded on the third day of the Assembly session, which commenced on October 14.
With white badges prominently displayed on their shirts, the opposition legislators expressed their discontent with the DMK government's “irresponsible and delayed” reaction to the kidney racket, raising significant ethical and legal concerns.
“This is not a trivial matter -- vulnerable and impoverished workers have been exploited, and their organs have been removed illegally. Yet, the government has chosen to remain silent,” stated an AIADMK member while addressing reporters outside the Assembly.
“We demand justice and a transparent investigation,” he added.
This demonstration followed a similar protest on Wednesday (October 15), when AIADMK MLAs entered the Assembly sporting black bands to voice their outrage over the Karur stampede tragedy and the alleged kidney theft case.
The opposition has accused the ruling party of displaying “criminal negligence” in managing both incidents.
The kidney trade scandal emerged in Namakkal district, where brokers reportedly manipulated destitute daily-wage workers into selling or “donating” their kidneys illegally.
Investigations indicated that two private hospitals -- one located in Tiruchirappalli and another in Perambalur -- were allegedly implicated in the operation.
The controversy escalated after opposition members asserted that one of the hospitals was owned by an individual closely associated with the ruling DMK, which they claimed clarified the government’s hesitance to conduct an impartial investigation.
Amid growing criticism and public uproar, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court mandated the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by South Zone Inspector General of Police Prem Anand Sinha to thoroughly investigate the scandal.
The court also instructed the team to provide regular updates on the investigation's progress.
The AIADMK has insisted that the state government ensure prompt arrests, victim protection, and stringent action against officials who may have overlooked earlier complaints.
