Chennai, Feb 23 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Police have successfully seized 100 sovereigns of gold and a luxury vehicle from Gnanasekharan, a biryani vendor, who was apprehended concerning the sexual assault of an engineering student at Anna University on December 23, 2024.
Investigations have indicated that Gnanasekharan was also involved in various thefts.
As per police sources, he admitted to burglarizing seven residences in the Pallikaranai neighborhood in Chennai.
The funds acquired from these thefts were allegedly utilized to purchase a luxury car, while the stolen jewelry was sold to support his biryani business and maintain an extravagant lifestyle.
After his confession, police tracked down and confiscated 100 sovereigns of gold from two dealers in Chennai.
Gnanasekharan is presently in police custody for additional questioning after the Alandur court sanctioned a three-day remand concerning the theft allegations.
He was initially detained on December 25, 2024, for the sexual assault incident at Anna University, where he reportedly attacked a female student in a secluded area of the campus.
Post his arrest, he was held under the Goondas Act based on the advice of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) overseeing the case.
This case has triggered political unrest, with Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai staging a protest outside his residence in Coimbatore.
He symbolically flogged himself six times to represent what he described as the declining law and order situation.
Annamalai also declared a 48-day fast and a pilgrimage to the six sacred sites of Lord Murugan as part of his protest. He criticized the Tamil Nadu Police for purportedly leaking the FIR in the case, which inadvertently revealed the identity of the 19-year-old victim.
Furthermore, he accused the police of failing to include Gnanasekharan in the state's rowdy list despite his involvement in numerous criminal activities.
Annamalai asserted that this omission was due to the accused's connections with the ruling DMK.
He provided evidence implying that Gnanasekharan was a DMK functionary and charged that the ruling party was attempting to distract from the state's law and order challenges by promoting a narrative of a North-South divide.
