Madurai, Dec 3 (NationPress) A tense and unusual scenario unfolded in Thirupparankundram on Wednesday when various Hindu organizations initiated protests, urging the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam lamp in the Vilakkumarathu area atop the hill. This led the district administration to impose prohibitory orders under Section 144.

The conflict originated after Justice Swaminathan had previously instructed that the traditional ceremonial lamp be lit at the Thirupparankundram hill. Following this, the temple administration made initial arrangements to comply with the court’s directive.

However, in a surprising turn of events, officials reversed their decision, sparking strong opposition from numerous Hindu groups. Outraged by what they considered a disregard for the court’s ruling, members of Hindu Makkal Katchi, Akhil Bharat Hanuman Sena, and South India Forward Bloc orchestrated a road blockade in the vicinity.

Protesters shouted slogans accusing the administration of dismissing religious sentiments and yielding to external pressures.

Meanwhile, as per tradition, the temple administration proceeded to light the Karthigai Maha Deepam at the Uchchipillaiyar Temple on the hill, further aggravating the tempers of the protesting groups and BJP members. They gathered near the 16-foot public hall, vocally condemning the administration’s actions.

In a bid to ascend the hill, several protesters attempted to breach police barricades, leading to a confrontation where two policemen suffered minor injuries.

Authorities swiftly detained those who attempted to climb the hill in defiance of security protocols.

With tensions still high and the threat of escalation imminent, Madurai District Collector Praveen Kumar implemented prohibitory measures under Section 144 in Thirupparankundram and nearby areas. This order restricts public gatherings, processions, and protests to avert further unrest. Police have increased security around crucial locations, including the hill path, temple grounds, and main roads of the town.

Officials have stated that while the situation is currently under control, it remains sensitive. The enforcement of Section 144 is expected to stay in effect until tranquility is restored.

The clash between religious factions and the administration has overshadowed the typically festive Karthigai Deepam rituals, with authorities now focused on preventing any additional escalations in the area.
