Chennai, July 28 (NationPress) A government school teacher in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district has been detained under the stringent Goondas Act following allegations of sexually abusing over 20 students.

The individual in question, M. Senthil Kumar (50), who resides in Iduhatty near Udhagamandalam, was serving as a science teacher in a government school when the allegations surfaced.

With more than 23 years of teaching experience across various government schools in Tamil Nadu, Senthil Kumar had recently been assigned to the Nilgiris.

The alarming accusations came to light during an awareness program organized by the district police aimed at educating students about sexual harassment and abuse.

During these sessions, multiple students reported that their teacher had been sexually assaulting them since his arrival at the school.

In response to the students' complaints, the police filed a case against Senthil Kumar under Section 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexual harassment, alongside relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Additionally, he was charged under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as some victims belong to marginalized communities.

Senthil Kumar was apprehended earlier this month and has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Considering the gravity of the offences and the potential danger posed by the accused, Nilgiris Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha recommended his detention under the Goondas Act—a preventive measure targeted at habitual offenders and those viewed as threats to public safety.

Acting on this recommendation, District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru endorsed the order, which has now been served to Senthil Kumar, currently incarcerated in Coimbatore Central Prison.

The police have expanded their investigation to include the schools where Senthil Kumar was previously employed.

Authorities are investigating whether similar offences occurred during his past appointments.

Officials are encouraging any additional victims to come forward as part of the ongoing inquiry.

This situation has sent shockwaves through the Nilgiris district, leading to calls for more stringent background checks and monitoring systems within educational institutions to ensure the safety of students.

Point of View

It is imperative that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students. The allegations against M. Senthil Kumar highlight a larger issue within our educational institutions regarding the need for rigorous screening and monitoring of personnel. As we navigate this troubling incident, we must advocate for systemic changes that protect the vulnerable and hold offenders accountable.
