Chennai, May 18 (NationPress) The government of Tamil Nadu announced significant advancements in agriculture, animal husbandry, dairying, and fisheries on Sunday, attributing these successes to the Dravidian Model of governance and strategic policy initiatives spearheaded by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
According to an official statement, foodgrain production has surged to 457.08 lakh metric tonnes, with agricultural growth averaging 5.66 percent from 2021 to 2024. This marks a remarkable upturn compared to the 1.36 percent growth seen during the prior AIADMK administration.
The government underscored its dedication to the agricultural sector by presenting five consecutive agriculture-focused budgets, a first in the state’s history.
These budgets encompassed a total allocation of Rs 1.94 lakh crore, facilitating various initiatives such as the reclamation of 47,286 acres of fallow land across over 10,000 village panchayats and the distribution of mechanized equipment to more than 62,000 farmers.
Enhancements to the irrigation infrastructure were also significant. The irrigated area grew by 2.26 lakh hectares, with 5,427 km of canals and 8,540 small ponds dredged. Furthermore, 917 irrigation lakes and 814 minor lakes were renovated to boost water storage and distribution, benefiting over 2.10 lakh farmers.
In the dairy sector, milk production reached 10,808 metric tonnes in 2023–24, while egg production soared to a record 2,233 crore, showcasing robust support for livestock and poultry farmers. The fisheries sector experienced growth with the establishment of 72 modern fish landing centres at an investment of Rs 1,428 crore, aimed at improving infrastructure and income for coastal communities.
“With Tamil Nadu leading the country in the productivity of various crops and consistently upgrading rural infrastructure, the government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development,” the statement noted. “The Dravidian Model is emerging as a transformative force in promoting rural progress.”
