Chennai, July 22 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) is poised to initiate an engaging series of high-level discussions addressing the challenges and prospective pathways for higher education, commencing on July 28.

The inaugural session will spotlight the influence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on education and the job market.

This conversation series, scheduled to occur bi-weekly, aims to unite academics, policy experts, and industry leaders from across India to explore vital issues confronting the higher education landscape.

Discussion topics will encompass the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) shift from a funding entity to a regulatory body, the current state of scholarships, the employability rate of graduates, the significance of happy classrooms and content teachers, research strategies, ranking systems, experiential learning, and the alarming drop in enrolment in basic science courses.

“Numerous challenges currently plague higher education, many of which require immediate policy attention,” remarked M.P. Vijayakumar, Vice-Chairman of TANSCHE.

“However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of these matters. These dialogues aim to bridge that gap, creating a platform for stakeholders to exchange insights and propose actionable solutions.”

A significant outcome of each session will be the formulation of a comprehensive policy paper, which will be presented to the Tamil Nadu government to influence future policies and reforms in higher education.

The first session will focus on the transformative potential of generative AI within classrooms and the changing employment landscape.

Vijayakumar emphasized the importance of understanding AI's implications for employment and emerging job roles, stating that it is vital for redesigning curricula and preparing students with necessary skills for the future.

Among the distinguished panellists confirmed for the inaugural session are Lakshmi Narayanan, Managing Trustee of the Chennai Mathematical Institute; Professor B. Ravindran, Head of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras; Dr. V. Ravindran, Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences; and Dhinakaran Vinayagamurthy, Head of IBM India’s Quantum Innovation Centre.
