Chennai, June 8 (NationPress) The government of Tamil Nadu unveiled an extensive report on Sunday, detailing its comprehensive urban transformation initiatives under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's Dravidian Model of governance. The state is experiencing rapid urban growth through targeted and inclusive investment in infrastructure.
As articulated in the report, the government has committed more than Rs 36,000 crore to enhance essential amenities in urban and semi-urban areas. A significant highlight includes the rollout of 71 major drinking water supply projects at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, which are set to benefit over 1.2 crore individuals across four Municipal Corporations, 13 Municipalities, 49 Town Panchayats, and over 10,000 rural settlements.
To bolster sanitation facilities, Rs 1,777 crore has been earmarked for 17 underground sewerage projects, while an additional Rs 6,655 crore is being funneled into the integrated enhancement of water bodies and public parks.
The report underscores a strong focus on connectivity, noting a substantial investment in road infrastructure, with Rs 4,673 crore allocated for upgrading over 9,000 km of urban roads, and Rs 3,057 crore approved for 8,065 new roadworks.
The government has also established 28 new bus stands and sanctioned 99 more, with a total budget of Rs 1,120 crore.
Over 3.65 lakh streetlights and LED lighting systems have been installed throughout urban regions.
As part of the Smart Cities Mission, development is underway in 11 Corporations with a total investment of Rs 10,639 crore.
In suburban Chennai, over 100 km of stormwater drains have been constructed to alleviate urban flooding.
The report also mentions enhancements in educational infrastructure, with the addition of 1,384 new classrooms in Corporation and Municipal schools, alongside the establishment of 100 libraries and knowledge centers statewide.
