Dehradun, Sep 2 (NationPress) Uttarakhand remains heavily affected by relentless downpours as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued both red and orange alerts across the state for Tuesday.
The severe weather has led authorities to initiate school closures in various districts as a safety precaution.
The IMD's forecast indicates, “very heavy rain/very intense to extremely intense spells of rain/heavy rain/thunderstorm accompanied with lightning/intense to very intense spell of rain likely to occur at isolated places.”
Due to the risks of cloudbursts, flash floods, and other dangers associated with ongoing rainfall, all educational institutions up to Class 12 will be closed in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar on Tuesday.
The likelihood of landslides and a sudden rise in water levels in rivers and streams remains significant in the mountainous areas.
The heavy rainfalls have disrupted normal life, affecting both the hilly and plain regions.
In Dehradun, the Tons River, adjacent to the Minas motor road, has risen to alarming levels. As it flows into the plains after merging with the Yamuna, the water level escalates rapidly, heightening the flooding risk.
Additionally, traffic has been severely impacted, with numerous stretches of the National Highway blocked due to landslides.
The Chamoli Police reported that routes are closed at several points, including Kanchan Ganga, Bhanerpani, Kameda, and between Kotdeep, Lolti, and Nasir Market Tharali to Lolti under the Thana Tharali area.
Moreover, considering the red and orange alerts from the Meteorological Department, both the Char Dham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib Yatra have been postponed until September 5.
The situation remains critical, and officials are advising residents in high-risk areas to exercise caution.
