Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu, Feb 7 (NationPress) The government of Jammu and Kashmir announced on Saturday during a session of the Legislative Assembly that the Union Territory attracted 1.77 crore visitors in 2025, which includes over 36,000 international tourists.
In response to a query from National Conference MLA Hasnain Masoodi, officials revealed that the total tourist count for the year was 1,77,65,390, with 36,410 being foreign nationals and the remaining 1,77,28,980 domestic travelers.
The Tourism Department clarified that while there are no specific targets set for 2026, ongoing promotional and developmental efforts are in place to enhance both foreign and domestic tourism.
Regarding the resumption of international flights from Srinagar airport, the government confirmed that the airport is well-equipped with immigration, customs, security, and passenger-handling facilities. However, the initiation of international operations is contingent upon the airlines' operational and commercial decisions. The department is prepared to accommodate international flights as soon as the airlines decide to commence operations.
Concerning the Home Stay Programme, the initiative has proven to be successful in increasing accommodation capacity, providing local employment opportunities, and promoting community involvement in tourism. Due to its positive outcomes, the programme is expected to expand to other promising regions.
The government also acknowledged challenges such as limited awareness, capacity deficiencies, and infrastructure problems, which are being tackled through awareness campaigns, capacity-building programs, and collaboration with relevant departments.
It is worth noting that tourism in J&K faced a significant setback on April 22, 2025, when terrorists backed by Pakistan tragically killed 26 individuals, including 25 tourists and a local pony owner in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow. In response to this attack, the Indian armed forces conducted strikes on terrorist camps located deep within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as part of Operation Sindoor, initiated following the Pahalgam incident.
