Chhattisgarh rail milestone: Train reaches Raoghat for first time since Independence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian Railways on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, inaugurated two new broad-gauge lines in Chhattisgarh — the Tadoki–Raoghat and Abhanpur–Kurud sections — marking the first time a train has reached Raoghat since India's Independence. New passenger services on the Raoghat–Raipur and Raipur–Kurud routes were flagged off simultaneously, while the foundation stone for an electric locomotive maintenance facility was laid in Raipur.
A Historic First for Remote Chhattisgarh
The 95-km Dalli-Rajhara–Rowghat line, completed at a cost of ₹1,628 crore, reached full operational status with the commissioning of the final 17.5-km Tadoki–Raoghat stretch. For residents of Chhattisgarh's remote southern regions, this marks the end of decades of rail isolation. The connectivity is expected to ease access to education, healthcare, employment and trade for local communities, while also accelerating iron ore transportation from the Rowghat region to the Bhilai Steel Plant and the broader iron and steel industry.
The events were held in the presence of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who participated via video conferencing.
What the Government Said
Chief Minister Sai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw on behalf of the state's three crore people, highlighting that Chhattisgarh has received over ₹7,000 crore in the railway budget this year alone. He said the new projects would give fresh impetus to industrial, commercial and socio-economic growth in remote areas of the state.
Minister Vaishnaw, in his address, listed key ongoing and completed works — including the Dalli-Rajhara–Rowghat line, gauge conversion of the Kendi–Abhanpur–Rajim–Dhamtari section, multi-tracking projects, and the recently approved Pendra Road–Bilaspur–Uslapur third line. Work on the Kharsia–Parmalkasa double line is also in progress.
New Passenger Services and Fares
The new Raipur–Raoghat passenger service will cost travellers just ₹55, positioning it as an affordable option for students, youth and daily commuters who previously had no direct rail link. Under the Abhanpur–Dhamtari gauge conversion project, the 22-km Abhanpur–Kurud section has been completed, expanding travel options to Raipur and boosting regional trade. Remaining work on the Kurud–Dhamtari stretch is expected to be completed soon.
Electric Locomotive Facility in Raipur
The proposed electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur, for which the foundation stone was laid on Tuesday, will have the capacity to handle up to 300 high-horsepower locomotives. The facility is designed to improve locomotive availability, meet growing freight demand, and strengthen overall rail operations in the region. This comes amid a broader national push to electrify and modernise freight corridors.
Broader Impact on Chhattisgarh
Notably, Chhattisgarh is one of India's most mineral-rich states, yet rail connectivity to its interior has historically lagged. The Rowghat region, in particular, holds significant iron ore reserves that have remained commercially constrained by poor transport infrastructure. The new line directly addresses that bottleneck. Together, these inaugurations represent a multi-decade effort to integrate the state's tribal hinterland into the national economic mainstream. The next phase of projects, including the pending Kurud–Dhamtari stretch, will be closely watched as a test of execution pace.
