Kolkata, May 19 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee addressed the media on his party's choice to withdraw cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan from the multi-party MPs delegations concerning Operation Sindoor. He emphasized that the Trinamool Congress does not endorse the Union government's decision to select the Baharampur MP without proper consultation with the party’s senior leadership.
"We reiterate our support for all actions taken by the Union government to fight terrorism, maintain the country’s sovereignty, and safeguard national interests. However, it is crucial to note that any delegation should be determined by our party. The Union government cannot unilaterally choose representatives for other parties. The BJP can decide their own representatives, but they cannot dictate terms for others," Banerjee stated before departing for Delhi.
He also insisted that the Union government must demonstrate a commitment to genuinely involve other parties in this process. "The leadership of other parties should have been consulted regarding the selection of their representatives. It is not acceptable for the Union government to decide who represents Trinamool Congress in such delegations. This does not imply that we are boycotting the Union government's initiative," he added.
On the topic of “untainted” or “genuine” teachers losing their jobs following a Supreme Court ruling that occurred last month, Banerjee expressed his respect for democratic movements but condemned vandalism in the name of protest.
"Destruction of public property under the guise of protest is intolerable," Banerjee remarked.
He also clarified that the recent organizational reshuffle within the Trinamool Congress, announced on Saturday, was based on performance metrics and was not intended to diminish the authority of certain leaders.
Following the reshuffle, it was determined that the organizational responsibilities for two out of 35 districts will now be managed by a multi-member core committee instead of individual district presidents.
