Agartala, Oct 10 (NationPress) Following the arrest of another fugitive from neighboring Assam on Friday, officials confirmed that three out of the six escapees from a Tripura jail have now been captured.
According to authorities, a total of six inmates — comprising five undertrial prisoners and one individual serving a life sentence — managed to escape from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in the early morning of October 1 after violently attacking a guard with sharp objects.
On Friday, a police team from Tripura, led by Sub-Inspector Biswajeet Das of the Dharmanagar police station, successfully re-arrested Rahim Ali in the Sribhumi district (formerly known as Karimganj district) in adjacent southern Assam.
The collaboration of the Assam Police was instrumental in the re-arrest of Rahim Ali, as noted by an official.
The official further stated that Abdul Patta and Narayan Chandra Datta were apprehended on October 1 and October 2, respectively, in the areas surrounding the Dharmanagar police station.
Superintendent of Police for North Tripura district, Avinash Kumar Rai, revealed that multiple teams are actively engaged in extensive search operations across north Tripura and the adjoining Unakoti districts to locate the remaining three fugitives.
The escaped undertrial prisoners include Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin, while Sunil Debbarma, who is serving a life term for severe crimes, including murder.
It is noteworthy that Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national, previously arrested under the Passport and other Acts, whereas Abdul Pata is a resident of Nilambazar in Assam's Sribhumi district.
Abdul Pata had previously been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 due to his involvement in illicit drug-related activities.
A Jail Department official reported that the Inspector General of Prisons has suspended Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya along with warders Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia, and Notan Lodh in connection to the jailbreak incident.
Disciplinary actions against these five jail staff members are expected to follow, as outlined by the official.
Post-jailbreak, a large-scale search operation was initiated by various security force teams, and efforts to locate the fugitives continue.
The Superintendent of Police for North Tripura district has also taken charge of one of the search teams.
All police stations and security posts in north Tripura and the neighboring Unakoti districts remain on high alert.
"We have also engaged the Border Security Force (BSF) to ensure close monitoring along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent the escapees from crossing over," the official added.
North Tripura district shares borders with Assam and Mizoram, as well as an international boundary with Bangladesh.
Officials confirmed, "All exit points along the borders with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh have been sealed in light of the incident to deter the fleeing inmates from leaving the state."
