Agartala, Jan 19 (NationPress) In a coordinated effort, Tripura Police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) apprehended two alleged arms and drug traffickers on Sunday as they arrived in Agartala via an express train, as reported by officials.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Rati Ranjan Debnath, announced that personnel from Tripura Police, along with RPF officials, seized a loaded pistol and approximately 100 bottles of prohibited cough syrup from the two young men hailing from Bihar after detaining them at the Agartala railway station.
This operation was executed on the Rani Kamalabati Express once the train reached the outskirts of the city.
According to the DIG, the two youths from Bihar were intercepted while traveling on the train. During a thorough inspection, authorities discovered a pistol with two live rounds and nearly 100 bottles of illegal cough syrup. The pistol is now being sent for forensic analysis.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Kartik Yadav and Amud, both from Bihar.
Police indicated that the suspects had been under surveillance since their departure from Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura.
DIG Debnath stated that further investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the illegal items and their intended recipients.
“Charges will be filed against the suspects under pertinent sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and the Arms Act,” the police official mentioned.
He also emphasized that enhanced collaboration between state police and railway authorities, especially intelligence units, has notably improved success rates against drug and arms trafficking, as well as human trafficking in recent times.
Authorities noted that consistent vigilance at railway stations and along railway routes has been pivotal in curbing inter-state smuggling activities in Tripura.
In a related incident last November, the Tripura Police arrested three individuals, including a suspected arms supplier from Bihar, and confiscated two country-made firearms and four magazines during a patrol in Agartala.
Police reports further indicate that the Arundhuti Nagar area, situated near the Agartala railway station, has seen numerous arrests of arms dealers over the years, with many cases involving illegal firearms smuggled into the state, often transported by train.
Earlier, on May 8 of last year, authorities discovered eight pistols and 16 empty magazines from an express train at the Agartala railway station.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) and RPF seized the weapons from the Tripura Sundari Express after it arrived from Firozpur, Punjab.
