Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Agartala, March 30 (NationPress) The Tripura government is preparing to implement extensive security protocols to guarantee the orderly and peaceful execution of the upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and the by-election in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency, officials announced on Monday.
The TTAADC, comprising 30 members—28 elected representatives and 2 appointed by the state government—will hold elections on April 12.
Simultaneously, the by-election for the Dharmanagar Assembly seat in North Tripura is slated for April 9.
A senior police official revealed that the Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag convened a high-level review meeting in a hybrid format with senior officers from the Police Headquarters.
This meeting included Superintendents of Police from all eight districts, Commandants of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), focusing on election readiness and security measures.
Officials reported that personnel from the state police, TSR, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Rifles will be deployed to uphold law and order during the elections.
Additionally, a security coordination meeting occurred between Assam Rifles officials and the Khowai district administration. This meeting involved the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, reviewing the security landscape in the bordering district ahead of the TTAADC elections.
Discussions centered on the current security climate, identifying sensitive areas requiring increased vigilance. Emphasis was placed on ensuring peaceful elections through robust coordination, timely intelligence sharing, and collaborative operational planning among all agencies.
Strategies for mutual support and quick response to any emergencies during the election period were also detailed. The meeting concluded with reassurances from Assam Rifles officials, alongside district administration and police, to collaborate closely to maintain law and order and ensure a secure electoral atmosphere.
The TTAADC region administers nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s total area of 10,491 sq km and is home to over 12.16 lakh residents, approximately 84 percent of whom belong to indigenous tribal communities. This makes the council a crucial constitutional body within the state’s political framework.
The elections have attracted participation from major political entities, such as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front, and the Congress.
Regional parties, including the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), as well as local parties and Independent candidates, are also contesting. A total of 173 candidates are vying for 28 TTAADC seats.
The BJP’s tribal allies, TMP and IPFT, will run separately after failing to form an alliance for the council elections.
In the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, six candidates from prominent parties, including the BJP, CPI(M)-led Left Front, and Congress, are in contention.
Additional candidates from the Amra Bangalee, Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), and an Independent candidate are also participating.
This by-election was prompted by the passing of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, who died on December 26, 2025, at a private hospital in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness at the age of 72.
