New Delhi, April 23 (NationPress) The procurement of tur (arhar) at minimum support price (MSP) through central agencies NAFED and NCCF is progressing rapidly in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. A total of 3.92 lakh metric tonnes of the crop has been acquired in these states as of April 22, benefiting 2,56,517 farmers, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare on Wednesday.

The procurement process also includes purchases from pre-registered farmers via the e-Samridhi portal of NAFED and the eSamyukti portal of NCCF. The central government is dedicated to ensuring the procurement of 100 percent of tur offered by farmers at the MSP through central nodal agencies, specifically NAFED and NCCF, as stated.

To encourage farmers to boost domestic pulse production and to lessen reliance on imports, the government has sanctioned 100 percent procurement of tur, urad, and masur at MSP under the price support scheme for the 2024-25 period.

Additionally, the government announced in the Budget 2025 that it would extend procurement at MSP for 100 percent of the production of tur, urad, and masur for an additional four years, until 2028-29, through central agencies like NAFED and NCCF, aiming for self-sufficiency in pulses across the nation.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan has sanctioned the procurement of tur in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh under the Price Support Scheme for the Kharif 2024-25 season, with a total procurement target of 13.22 lakh metric tonnes (LMT).

The minister has further approved a 30-day extension of the procurement period in Andhra Pradesh, allowing it to continue for up to 22 days into the next month, in the interest of farmers, the statement noted.

The central government’s purchase of pulses at MSP ensures that farmers receive a fair price, preventing them from being at the mercy of market fluctuations. Since the government is prepared to purchase the entire crop at MSP, private traders must offer a higher price to acquire pulses.
