The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, faces its first major parliamentary test on Tuesday, 12 May, as the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly takes up the election of its Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The ruling alliance's nominee, senior TVK leader J.C.D. Prabhakar, is widely expected to be elected unopposed, given the coalition's commanding majority in the 234-member House.

Who Is J.C.D. Prabhakar

Prabhakar, 73, is a three-time legislator and a former All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader who switched to TVK ahead of the Assembly elections. He has since been recognised as one of the key architects of the party's organisational structure and election manifesto. He was elected to the Assembly from the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai. TVK has separately nominated Ravi Shankar for the post of Deputy Speaker.

Ruling Alliance's Numerical Strength

The ruling combine — comprising TVK, the Indian National Congress (Congress), Left parties, and several supporting allies — commands the backing of approximately 120 MLAs in the House, giving the government a comfortable edge. This is the first formal institutional test for a government that came to power as the single largest party and subsequently consolidated its position with outside support from parties previously aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led bloc.

AIADMK's Internal Crisis Adds Stakes

The party is now locked in an intense leadership tussle between former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior leader S.P. Velumani. According to party sources, around 30 AIADMK MLAs have rallied behind Velumani and are demanding that he be recognised as the legislature party leader, while 17 MLAs continue to back Palaniswami. Both factions have reportedly submitted separate letters to the Speaker's office staking claim to the official opposition leadership.
