Mysuru, Sep 26 (NationPress) S.L. Bhyrappa, the acclaimed Kannada author and recipient of the Saraswati Samman and Padma Shri, was honored with final tributes by Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi on behalf of the Central government.
Union Minister Joshi made his way to Mysuru to deliver Prime Minister Narendra Modi's heartfelt condolences to Bhyrappa's family.
He presented floral tributes on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Central government, subsequently attending the cremation ceremony near Chamundi Hill, where he honored the esteemed novelist and researcher.
"Today, the towering litterateur Bhyrappa has merged with the five elements. Despite his fame and recognition, he embodied utmost simplicity. He was a generous writer who viewed awards as contributions to the less fortunate and to society," said the Union Minister.
"S.L. Bhyrappa was among the most talented writers this land has ever known. His novels were never penned without extensive study and research. He meticulously read, analyzed, critiqued, and then composed in his unique style," he added.
"Bhyrappa's literary journey was both historical and scholarly. Over 25 of his novels have been translated into various languages, including Marathi, Telugu, Chinese, and Russian. Many of his works have undergone numerous reprints, earning him a vast readership and admirers beyond Karnataka," Union Minister Joshi pointed out.
"He never pursued accolades nor sought recommendations. Prestigious honors such as the Saraswati Samman, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri came seeking him out. He was a distinguished author celebrated with accolades across the nation," he remarked.
Union Minister Joshi shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his condolence message, stated, "We have lost a profound writer and researcher who deeply examined the soul of India."
Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow, extending strength to Bhyrappa's family and added, "On behalf of the Indian government, personally, I pay my final respects to Bhyrappa's mortal remains," he concluded.
Ninety-four-year-old Bhyrappa passed away on September 24 in Bengaluru due to cardiac arrest.
The Congress-led government in Karnataka has announced plans to establish a memorial in honor of Padma Bhushan awardee Bhyrappa.
