Chandigarh, Sep 26 (NationPress) The legislators of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab vocally protested against the Central government inside the state Assembly on Friday, brandishing placards and shouting slogans.
They asserted that the Centre is merely “paying lip service” to those impacted by the floods in the state.
Furthermore, they emphasized that the Central government has yet to release the promised Rs 1,600 crore that Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged during his visit to the flood-affected regions.
“This amount is utterly inadequate for the rehabilitation of those affected by the floods,” they stated.
Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema accused the Congress of “shielding the Central government”.
The special Assembly session saw the absence of both BJP MLAs, Jangi Lal Mahajan and Ashwani Kumar Sharma.
Minister Cheema noted that it has been 20 days since the floods, yet “we haven't received any funds from the Central government”.
He pointed out that the BJP government is “not aiding the people of Punjab during this crisis”.
Additionally, he criticized the Congress for “misleading the Punjabis and politicizing this painful issue”.
In support of the 'Rehabilitation of Punjab' resolution, the Finance Minister painted a grim picture of the devastation that began in the Kapurthala district in August, leading to severe flooding by the end of that month.
He mentioned that the state government has mobilized all available resources for relief and rescue efforts, with AAP MLAs and Ministers actively supporting flood victims, questioning whether the Central government has met its obligations under the federal framework.
Highlighting the significant delay in the Prime Minister's visit, which occurred nearly a month after the floods started, Minister Cheema contrasted this with the swift relief extended to Afghanistan, questioning the inconsistency in approach.
“What’s even more alarming is the Prime Minister's meager Rs 1,600 crore relief package, of which not a single rupee has reached Punjab so far.”
In critiquing Prime Minister Modi's tour of the flood-hit areas, the Finance Minister commented that “the Prime Minister failed to console a family that lost three members to the floods, limiting his visit to a mere photo opportunity.”
He reminded the Assembly that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann wrote to the Prime Minister in late August, requesting the release of Rs 60,000 crore in pending funds.
He highlighted a troubling disparity, remarking that the Prime Minister “is inaccessible to the elected Chief Minister but readily meets with appointed officials.”
He expressed disappointment over the absence of both BJP MLAs from the Assembly, suggesting they could have clarified the use of the Rs 1,600 crore relief package, from which not a single penny has been allocated to the state's exchequer.
“Today, the BJP's position has been exposed nationwide,” he concluded.
Earlier on Friday, State Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal introduced a resolution during the special two-day session of the Vidhan Sabha, calling for a special package of Rs 20,000 crore to assist flood-affected families, farmers, and for restoring infrastructure throughout the state.
