Bhubaneswar, Nov 19 (NationPress) The Minister of State for the Works Department, Prithiviraj Harichandan, articulated on Wednesday that the triumph of extensive urbanisation is vital for realizing the vision of a developed Odisha by 2036.
Speaking at the second day of the two-day District Collectors and SPs Conference in Bhubaneswar, Harichandan underscored the importance of planned and sustainable development within urban locales across the state. He remarked that the expansion of cities significantly boosts the economic advancement of both the state and the nation.
The minister noted that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi are focusing on the progress of all sectors associated with urban development.
“Cities should serve as engines for growth. Urbanisation is essential for the economic development of a district,” he stated.
Harichandan advised district collectors to draft long-term development strategies for urban areas under their supervision. He pointed out that the state government is initiating projects like constructing bypass roads and ring roads around major cities to mitigate traffic congestion.
He further mentioned that the government is actively working to tackle the increasing issue of urban waste management, urging collectors to devise strategies for utilizing waste materials in road construction.
The minister revealed that dedicated utility corridors will be established in urban regions to accommodate drainage systems, electricity, telephone lines, gas pipelines, and drinking water supply.
He acknowledged that unplanned urban growth has led to challenges concerning stormwater drainage.
“The government will implement a distinct policy for pothole-free roads and their proper upkeep, ensuring timely and systematic repairs. The land acquisition process in urban areas will also be streamlined to facilitate the construction of new roads and other infrastructure projects,” he stated.
During the conference, Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra emphasized the necessity for slum-free urbanisation.
He highlighted that addressing the issues faced by slum dwellers and providing them with adequate housing is a significant government priority. Mahapatra also stressed the importance of establishing cowsheds to manage stray cattle and urged district collectors to conduct regular inspections in slum areas to prevent illegal activities.
