Vadodara, July 10 (NationPress) Following the tragic collapse of the Vadodara bridge on July 9, which caused several vehicles to plunge into the river below, authorities confirmed on Thursday that 15 lives have been tragically lost, while the search intensifies for at least three individuals still missing.
Rescue operations are being conducted around the clock by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local agencies.
So far, over eight individuals have been successfully rescued from the water.
On Wednesday morning, District Collector Dr. Anil Dhameliya provided updates on the situation during a press briefing.
“The NDRF and SDRF are conducting thorough search operations over a 4-kilometre stretch downstream. This morning, three additional bodies were recovered, raising the death toll to 15. Sadly, three individuals are still unaccounted for. The support from local communities has been remarkable,” he stated.
Dr. Dhameliya further revealed that two vehicles—a car and an Eicher tempo—are still missing, with the tempo being trapped in thick mud, complicating recovery efforts.
“We appeal to the public to share any information regarding the missing individuals. Every piece of information assists our ground teams,” he emphasized.
Among the various vehicles involved, an empty chemical tanker is precariously positioned amidst the bridge's remnants. “Removing the tanker without proper support poses a risk of it falling. Our teams are actively working to stabilize it as rescue operations continue below,” the District Collector noted.
Meanwhile, the Padra Police have initiated an accidental death case based on a complaint from Arjunsinh Madhavsinh Padhiar, a local resident from Dariyapura near Mujpur. Officials have committed to a comprehensive investigation once the rescue efforts conclude.
Teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are prepared to collect structural evidence from the site of the collapse. Additionally, testimonies from survivors and families of the deceased will be gathered to support the inquiry.
Environmental issues have arisen following reports that one of the submerged vehicles was transporting chemicals.
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has performed an on-site inspection, implementing emergency measures to prevent any risk of river contamination. Authorities are also considering the demolition of parts of the remaining structure if deemed necessary.
Constructed over 40 years ago, the Gambhira Bridge had reportedly exhibited signs of structural decline in recent years, with locals frequently expressing concerns about its safety.
Despite these warnings, the bridge continued to be a crucial artery for both heavy and light vehicles, linking rural areas of Vadodara district to significant trade and transport routes in Saurashtra.
Recent monsoon rains have intensified, potentially compromising the already weakened foundation of the bridge.
Eyewitness reports indicate a loud cracking sound preceded the collapse, suggesting structural failure due to prolonged neglect and insufficient maintenance.
Local residents and activists had previously submitted memorandums urging authorities to perform a safety audit of the bridge, but no decisive actions were taken.
