Chennai, Aug 5 (NationPress) VCK leader and MP Thol Thirumavalavan has declared that his party will conduct statewide demonstrations at all district headquarters on August 9, urging the Tamil Nadu government to implement specific legislation aimed at halting honour killings. In his statement, Thirumavalavan voiced alarm over the recent rise in caste-based murders within the state and demanded strict legal actions to eliminate such offenses.
“We are calling for a distinct law to tackle honour killings, which continue to afflict our society. Our protests on August 9 will deliver a powerful message to the government,” he asserted.
Alongside the protest announcement, Thirumavalavan vehemently criticized the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls happening in the election-bound Bihar. He branded the initiative as an “anti-democratic exercise” allegedly orchestrated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) under pressure from the BJP-led Union government.
He alleged that the first phase of the SIR had led to the exclusion of approximately 65 lakh voters, predominantly from minority communities.
“This is a calculated move that presents a significant threat to democracy,” he claimed.
Thirumavalavan also criticized the lack of discourse in Parliament regarding this matter. “While numerous Opposition leaders and Members of Parliament have requested a discussion on this issue, the SIR has yet to be deliberated upon,” he noted.
He urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to call for an all-party meeting to evaluate the ramifications of the SIR and formulate a unified approach.
The VCK leader further warned that a similar voter revision initiative might soon be implemented in Tamil Nadu.
“We have obtained information that the ECI intends to apply SIR across all states. It could potentially take place here as well,” he cautioned.
He expressed concerns regarding the inclusion of interstate migrant workers in the Tamil Nadu electoral rolls. “Around 70 lakh individuals have migrated to Tamil Nadu from other states for employment and commerce. Attempts to register them without thorough scrutiny may jeopardize the state's long-term interests,” he added.
